A Response to Miss America’s ‘Parades are the Worst’ Interview

  1. Julie O says:

So incredibly well said! I am not a former pageant girl but I love them and eagerly watch them every year, especially Miss America. Betty’s comments are disappointing but how she handles herself from here on out will speak to her legacy as Miss America. I’m so glad you addressed this issue and I couldn’t agree with you more!

  2. Jane Carol Keim says:

Wow … As usual you nailed it!!! As a woman who has been watching Miss America for over fifty years it was disheartening to hear both sides … It seems the media’s job today is to stir up unrest so I am not surprised (but disappointed) that one woman would portray another so negatively. Betty should have defended this organization that continues to rally when thrown negative comments from the outside pageantry world. This organization has generated some of the finest women in America (including you) and needs to be applauded. Hopefully she will realize as you said that she needs to make a statement praising what Miss America has done for her and so many others. As have so many others, as a little girl I dreamed of being Miss America and my hope it will continue to give that dream to others.

    • I highly doubt we’ll see her address this article head on, given that she’s doing no more media until the Miss America Pageant in a few weeks. It’s a bummer– but I do hope she learns from this!

I find it particularly interesting that there were already rumors of this attitude that Betty has and I am wondering if this was always her reputation throughout her years coming up through the organization or if it suddenly appeared once she was crowned Miss America. I am a huge fan of the pageant and often thought that they should poll the contestants to see who THEY thought the winner should be and have that count in the scoring toward the final outcome. I know there’s a private interview but a good actress can project warmth and gratitude one on one.. but I would imagine the pageant world is pretty small and they know going in who is gracious and kind and who is a diva. Clearly this one is the latter.

    • Polling the contestants would certainly yield some interesting results!

She has only been competing for a couple of years and she has always been so sweet and so gracious for any help she ever received. She worked very hard to win her local, state, and national title! She has not always been like that. I believe the stress and lack of rest are just getting the best of her. We all have bad days and chose our wording poorly from time to time whether we are the common average everyday person or a celebrity. We are all guilty at some point. Betty is a truly sweet person!
